If you read their waywithwords blogpost , they have explained or rather took pride in explaining why their recruitment process is toughest compared to any other transcription company. Go ahead and apply if you are really challenged to take their tough test. It can be a great way to test your transcription skills and see where you stand if you have transcribed before. Way With Words Transcription Pay: You would be curious to know the pay since their transcription test is so hyped in being tough and extremely difficult to crack. In case you are unaware, per audio minute is not equal to per minute transcribed. A typical one hour audio file may take you more than 4 hours to 5 hours or even longer depending on the quality of the file you have received.

I wonder why the pay is not that great when the transcription test is the toughest in the industry! Also, you are paid only on a monthly basis which could be a disadvantage for some looking for weekly payments. The payment mode is via PayPal and U. K residents can get directly through their bank account. They are not definitely scamming in those regards. Also, they are in business for more than 10 years and transcribers are hired and actually earn from them. My Take: The way with words transcription rates are not the best in the industry and people hardly clear their test process the test conversion rates are the lowest in the industry. So both for absolute beginners the test factor and experienced transcribers the pay factor the underlying purpose gets defeated.

I remember that I also tried this a couple of years back but that my attempt was rejected. Is there anyone out there that has passed this test and have some tips? I passed all the stuff for the first 2 or 3 sections and then they said I didn't pass the last test. She said :I found you had transcribed some of the sound file extremely well, but then at other times you did not manage to make out what was being said, and there were just too many words which you did not transcribe correctly". Sorry I can't be of more help. They don't give you back your corrected test file either so I don't know any more than that. I'd like to check it out and see what it is all about How many tests? Can you tell us any more about hours? Or is all that on their website? I understand the pay is pretty good. Hope that helps. I found the Britney and Justin thing pretty easy, but then I'm a transplanted Brit, so the accents weren't a problem for me.

How To Pass Transcription Tests Online And Get Hired

Their training is much more rigorous than any other transcription company I've worked for. They're very strict on their do's and don't's and you have to adhere very stringently to their way of doing things - which, if you're used to working for US-based transcription companies, might not be the way you're used to doing things. In fact, my monitor is festooned with sticky notes to remind me when I do transcripts for them. On the plus side, the people working there, the trainers and allocators, are among the nicest people I've met in this business. They always seem to have work, which is a huge difference to many of the other companies I work for, so I'm not wasting half a day sitting around waiting for an allocator to grace me with a file.

There are minuses also. For non-Brits, I already mentioned the accents and some of them are pretty regional British accents which could really be a problem. For good, clear audio you're paid at a ratio of hour of audio. So if you do an hour long file, you get paid four hours. More difficult audio can be as high as It sounds great, and it usually is. But this week, I had to do a file which was paid at because of the audio, which was great. BUT it was a verbatim transcript. Tons of repeated words, ums and ahs, switching back and forth in midsentence between the interviewer and the interviewee. And it probably wound up taking me a lot more than four hours to work it, even though the audio was good. And I'm thinking, if I were typing this for a per word company, I'd probably be making more money than this!

That means that by noon here in WA, it's already 10pm in SA. I can usually find an allocator until about noon or 1pm, but after that, they're finished for the day. So although I would probably make more money working for a company like Ubiqus, for example, who pay per word; I've found myself doing more and more work for WWW just because the audio is consistently excellent, the people are much nicer, and the work is constantly available. They even have what they call an Early Bird option on their extranet where a transcriber can download files without being allocated them, which they tailor to an individual typist's abilities. So as a beginner with their company, the only files on the EB system are the really easy audio. If you're lucky enough to get chosen to work for them, it's a really great company to work for. Do you ever finish your files before your alloted ratio time is up, thereby essentially increasing your pay?

Thank you so much for that. I'm sure it will help a lot of us. Rachiegoth , AM I find that the quality of their audio has been so outstanding up to this point that I'm coming in under the four hours of allotted time quite frequently. And as I become more used to their way of doing things, the time spent proofing is lessening also. Alba , AM Thanks for your posts, Rachiegoth. Your input is very helpful. I take on board all you say about why you like working with this company and that you acknowledge you could earn more elsewhere. I know absolutely nothing about this company so I make only a general comment on rates. Rachiegoth , PM I'm right there with you, Alba. The rates are low, and if I didn't like the company and the availability of work so much I would probably just work with the other companies I work for.

Mind you, this post is not about me but about the art of transcription. So, I saw an ad by a company called Way With Words, who are recruiting and indeed, have a rather rigorous screening in order to earn a few cents IF you pass ALL their tests, mind you. Get this. They give you a complicated grammar test that I cannot print here due to my not wanting to violate any rules. I passed it, I am a grammar teacher. However, they then send you the Britney and Justin bit of audio which is really rubbish but I went through with it just to see how far this ride lasts.

I need to see things to the end, so sat with it, made my mom and everyone else I knew listen to it Yes, cause it was crap. Now this is where I become suspicious as they get a 7. Again, if they did this with all individuals applying - would they not be getting free transcription services? How does one not know that those are not so called 'live' files? Now, I am an English teacher and I have given many audio tests I am writing this to inform you that those few minutes took all of US hours Now here is the fascinating part. How much do they want to pay you? At that quality of audio, it will take you a day - you are better off selling stamps at the Post Office. If you insist on transcribing, go for companies like Scribie that actually PAY you for the sample test that they give.

I will start adding payment proof here soon. One last thing, Way With Words, offers workshops too - and they do not come cheaply, save your money and work for online transcription services rather, if you want - they will direct you to the free software etc That is my two cents which will hopefully save you lots of time and some money.

I was just wondering if they're reliable, and what their usual audio quality is like. I passed the first part of their test, and just completed the audio test file. The file they had me download for my test had a bunch of background music, and there were some words that were unintelligable. Also, it was british and scottish speakers, but I don't mind that. I can pick out what is being said. I hope I don't fail that part of the test because of their questionable audio. Any input? Laurie There are quite a few threads on here about this company. Last I read, it seems its audio tends to be good, and the company is nice to work with. I understand it is, like most companies, a stickler for spelling, capitalisation and the like.

If you really want a career in this field, you will need to make typing a regular habit. Keep in mind that in most cases accuracy is more important than speed, although both are important skills. Listen Carefully Being able to hear words from audio recordings properly is a major requirement for passing a transcription test online. Typing too many wrong words during testing can adversely affect your score. Make sure when you practice and test that you are completely focused on the audio without distractions. That usually means turn off the TV or any other background noise that may disrupt your performance. There may be times when words are completely unintelligible, in which you will either insert this term in brackets such as [unintelligible] or whatever the study guide for a specific test calls for. Transcription tests are timed so you will have to use your best judgment and move on.

Understand Proper Punctuation Punctuation is a tricky topic because different rules for punctuation are applied by different sources, depending on the purpose. Academic writing, for example, has strict punctuation rules in which the US and UK differ. In the US, periods and commas are usually placed inside quotes but are placed outside in the UK. Remember in your transcription practice to already know which method you will use, as determined by where the testing is based.

Transcribing for a media firm may have different punctuation rules. While much of AP style conforms to American academic punctuation rules, media outlets that are more commentary-based often have looser rules. So it's easy to be thrown off "proper English" rules if you read a lot of pop culture literature. To be safe, you should practice audio transcription using standard academic rules for testing. Then in your transcription practice, follow the rules according to your client or employer.
